Conference from a Benedictine Priest

Father David Brown, OSB, of Belmont Abbey in North Carolina made a retreat at the Abbey this month, and gave us a thoughtful conference connecting the Scriptures to the Rule of St. Benedict. He posed to us the question Jesus asked Mary Magdalene on the morning of His Resurrection: “Whom are you looking for?” and the question the hearers asked the Apostles on the day of Pentecost when they became convinced that Christ truly was the Messiah: “Brothers, what are we to do?” For Fr. David, a similar question struck him as he was reading the Rule of St. Benedict as a senior in college. When he came to the line in the Prologue of the Rule where St. Benedict asks, “Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?” his response was, “I do,” and a couple years later he entered the monastery. He deduced that our response to these questions as monastics is to be faithful to the Rule of St. Benedict, especially the vow of fidelity to the monastic way of life, where we continually seek to grow in the virtues of silence, obedience and humility. And humility, he noted, is the owning of both our faults and strengths. He remarked that it is sometimes more difficult to acknowledge the good we do than the bad, and true humility means to recognize both. His final remark was about preaching the Gospel, which is another important aspect of answering the question, “What are we to do?” He said that as contemplative Benedictines our evangelization takes the form of living lives of total self-surrender to God, hidden in Christ, laying down our lives in the service of our community, and welcoming Christ in all the guests who come, bringing them with us to the Father in prayer. Using the words of St. Francis, he closed with the quote, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.”

We pray blessings on Fr. David and his community, and are grateful for the time he shared with us. We hope he comes back soon!
